Hi - I’m Matt. I started losing my hair in my late 20s. Note the haunted look in my eyes, likely after seeing a sink drain full of hair strands.

The truth was unavoidable - my previously thick head of hair was getting thinner and thinner.

Staring every day feeling so undesirable took a toll. I started to feel like I had less value as a person.

We associate hair with youthfulness and attractiveness. It impacts our self esteem and our body image. Hair gives us confidence as we navigate the people and relationships and circumstances that make up our lives.

It’s hard to give that up.

MY BATTLE AGAINST HAIR LOSS

So, when I was 28, I started topical minoxidil, available over the counter. When I hit 32, I started prescription oral finasteride.

Most people stop there. Not me. I tried everything. Serums. Supplements. Invasive procedures.

One time I had blood drawn from my arm and injected into my scalp to stimulate any dormant hair follicles. Another time I bought a liquid classified by the FDA as a ‘research chemical’ and soaked my scalp in it because Reddit said was an effective hair loss treatment.

Did any of this slow my hair loss down? It might have!

Did the loss stop? No, it did not.

So when I hit 35, I bought an FUE hair transplant for $10,000, to fill my receding hairline back in. And it didn't work! I opted for the ARTAS robotic transplant, which destroyed almost every hair graft it extracted.

I then opted for an FUT (strip) hair transplant at age 38 for $10,000.

The thing about hair transplants, thought, is that the regions of transplanted hair are nowhere near the density of your original hair - it’s thin and brittle. This photo is me one year after my second transplant. Not an ideal outcome!

My Results

So what did I get from ten years of experimenting with hair restoration products, prescriptions, and procedures?

Light side effects from the oral medications. My testicles hurt for months, and mild brain fog comes and goes to this day.

Over $20,000 spent on hair transplant procedures.

Scalp disfigurement, and the $3,000 I spent on scalp tattoos.

Let’s add another $3,000 for the medicine prescription costs, doctor visits, and other random procedures and call it $26,000 in total costs trying to save my hair and my self esteem.

Know what I didn’t get? Thicker hair.

I realized male pattern baldness is like the tide. You can fight it. You can use tools to prolong the fight. But it’s just a matter of time. The tide - nature - always wins.

Still, I kept fighting. After a while, I started to wonder if there was a better strategy. I was so worried about suffering further loss that I wasn’t appreciating the hair I still had.

The Beginning

I started to explore men’s hair styling products in an effort to conceal my hair loss. Some helped a bit, some didn’t. Some worked in harmony, others did not play well together.

Eventually, I had a breakthrough. I found a combination of several styling products that instantly thickened up my thin hair strands considerably and concealed my scalp skin at the same time. It took about 30 minutes of work to style properly, and it gave me options when it came to hairstyles.

The results were transformative. I would get complements on my hair - envious comments on how good it looked. On how good I looked. Younger. Stronger. More attractive. When I put in the effort to style my ‘mop’ properly, people could barely tell I was losing my hair.

The Mop Maker

It didn’t take long before I got frustrated with the cost and the time involved. I was spending around $100.00 a month on the products, and spending a lot of time every morning on layering them together, getting everything to sit right, and then styling my hair.

I wondered if, rather than buying each product separately, was there a way to combine them into a single bottle?

The answer was yes.
